Bruno Munari.

Looking through Tom’s artist book collection, i came across one by Bruno Munari (top left). I loved the playful use of colour and simplicity in this book and decided to look into him more. He created these machine titled ‘useless machines’ which are similar to Alexander Calder and Tät-Tat’s design work. I’m more interested in what he created after that, which are these books – ‘useless books’. He has taken a simple format and used it to create something much more than just a book. While there is no literature, there is a language of sorts. While they can’t be used in the traditional sense, they become artworks. While some can be sculptural, others play on collage and colour. I’m drawn to his work because he is pushing the traditional assumptions surrounding an object, which is exactly what im trying to achieve in my own work.
